“또 다른 세상은 가능하다.”
?
희망의 메시지를 던지는 이 말을 마음속 슬로건으로 삼고 있는 박원순 희망제작소 상임이사를 24일 밤 ‘책으로 따뜻한 세상 만드는 교사들’(책따세) 8월 월례강좌에서 만났다.

우리 사회의 새로운 기부문화, 나눔문화의 꽃을 피워가는 박원순 상임이사는 ‘세상에 희망 심기’를 주제로 책따세(대표 허병두) 교사들과 학부모, 학생들과 2시간 가량 이야기를 나눴다.
?
박 이사는 1975년 서울대 법대에 입학했으나, 두달 만인 5월22일 학생운동과 관련해 긴급조치 위반 혐의로 구속 제적되었다. 그는 이때 4개월 동안 감옥에서의 독서 경험을 잊을 수 없다고 했다. 그는 감옥에서 독서에 열중하며 자유로운 상상력을 키울 수 있었다고 밝혔다.

그는 “헤르만 헤세의 <싯다르타>를 읽고는 무한한 상상력을 펼치는 자신은 자유이며, 오히려 자신을 감시하는 교도관이 2중 3중의 감옥에 갇혀 있다고 생각하며 ‘해탈’을 경험했다”며 “헤르베르트 마르쿠제의 <이성과 혁명>, 김동리의 <사반의 십자가>, 리스먼의 <고독한 군중> 등 사회과학과 인문과학을 가리지 않고 폭넓은 독서를 집중적으로 할 수 있었다”고 말했다.

그는 청소년에게 권하고 싶은 책에 대해 “근대과학사를 읽고 상상력을 키울 수 있었다”며 “시오노 나나미의 <로마인 이야기>와 데이비드 스즈키의 <굿뉴스>는 읽을 만한 책”이라고 말했다.

대학에서 제적된 그는 25세에 사법고시에 합격해 검사 생활을 거쳐 인권변호사로 활동했다. 그는 자신의 학습방법과 관련해 “공부는 재미가 있어야 한다”며 “사법고시 준비를 할 때 내가 출제자라면 이렇게 출제하고 이렇게 답하겠다는 관점을 갖고 즐겁게 공부했다”고 밝혔다.

그는 평소 관심 있는 주제와 관련된 자료는 오려 붙이기를 하고 오색 종이로 파일 정리를 하고 있다고 말했다. 그는 고문에 관심을 갖고 신문 스크랩 등 자료를 꾸준히 모아 방대한 규모의 <야만시대의 기록>을 출판하기도 했다. 자료만 잘 모으면 책은 저절로 나오게 된다는 것이다.

그는 지식의 관리와 관련해 “필요한 통계자료와 좋은 문장을 수집하고 있다”며 “<로마인 이야기>를 읽고 그 책에 나오는 좋은 문장을 정리하기도 했다”고 밝혔다.

그는 자신의 직업을 사회디자인을 하는 사회운동가라고 말한다. 그는 “희망제작소는 누군가 외로움과 슬픔에 몸을 떨 때, 문득 곁을 보면 가까이 있는 듬직한 친구 같은 존재가 되고 싶다”며 시민들의 참여를 요청하고 있다.
